Don't feel trapped if you don't know how to file for divorce or separation and can't afford an attorney. You can file for divorce or separation on your own, pro se, and even get your filing fees waived if you qualify as low-income. If you weren't married but need a custody agreement or parenting plan you can also file those documents pro se.

We can help complete all the documents necessary for pro se litigants to remove themselves from a situation or marriage which is no longer safe or beneficial.

FAMILY LAW

Believe it or not, even low-income people can benefit from doing their own estate planning. Despite not having vast investments or property holdings to disburse, a basic will can help alleviate a lot of stress for your loved ones during an already stressful time. Additionally, a will allows you to name a guardian for minor children in the event of your passing or if you become incapacitated allowing your wishes regarding caregivers to be known by the courts.

On the other hand, some people (especially those with no minor children and small estates) do not leave an official will, leaving their family members or representatives to figure out what to do with their personal possessions. For estates under $64,000 in assets, we can help you complete a Small Estate Affidavit which would authorize the collection and disbursement of personal property such as vehicles, home furnishings and bank accounts.

NOTARY SERVICES

We can notarize any documents you've prepared yourself requiring an acknowledgement or jurat. Colorado State law does not allow notaries to notarize documents they've prepared, so unfortunately we can not notarize any documents we have prepped. We can help locate another notary when necessary.

FYI: An acknowledgement is more frequently used and verifies the identity of the signer while confirming that they personally signed a document. The difference between this and a jurat, a.k.a. jurat oath, is that with a jurat the notary has to administer an oath or affirmation of facts to the signer beforehand in addition to verifying the signers identity. In these cases the signer is swearing to the truthfulness of the facts contained within the document itself.

Colorado Springs, as everywhere, has it's fair share of disreputable landlords who prey on low-income renters to further their personal wealth.

If you've been served a 3 day demand or a Notice to Vacate or other eviction paperwork it's important that you act fast! Don't just ignore it in hopes it will go away, and absolutely don't skip any listed court dates.

We can help you complete an Answer to a Summons, and complete the court's filing fee waiver forms to get any filing fees waived for low-income individuals. Make sure you tell the court your side of the story and don't allow a slumlord to victimize you!
